Weʼve raised $4,190 to Help Stu & Rhi & their family help rebuild after a wild Fire took their home

Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape, South Africa
Funded on Friday, 31st March 2017

Don't have time to donate right now?

    Story

Several Plettenberg Bay homes were destroyed and residents evacuated as a massive wildfire swept through the coastal holiday town on Tuesday.

Rhian Berning & Stuart Palmer are two of the most conscientious and lovely people. They have just lost their home to a wild fire fueled by high temperatures and drought.
The fire initially broke out on Friday ...this was Rhi posting on the state of climate change on Saturday "...And how that change unfolds is really up to us... if we remember to ask ourselves with all the daily choices we make...is what I'm doing, what I'm choosing, what I'm buying, what I'm saying having a positive impact on the people whose lives my choices touch and on the living planet systems that make it all possible? And if they're not then it's up to us to change our habits, ask the questions and make the demands that will make it so. Only we can change the present course of the earthship we love so much. There is certainly no one who is going to do it for us..... (I'll now stumble off my Saturday morning soapbox :) and check in on the wildfire down the road.... )

Despite being "contained" on Monday by Tuesday it flared up again and became out of control from about 2pm... Their house was one that was unable to be saved by the brave firefighter.
Lets help them on what will surely be a long an difficult road to rebuild their lives.

From Rhi & Stu: Thank you to all of you have supported us so generously with this spontaneous crowdfunder that Megan set up for us, it is incredible and is going to really help us rebuild our lives. We are still overwhelmed about starting from absolute scratch to rebuild our entire homestead from rainwater tanks to veggie garden to fruit trees to a beautiful home, but we are also excited by the prospect of creating a greener and stronger home that is climate resilient and adaptable to a fast changing future. We are so deeply grateful to you all

Update from Rhi: Seeing the burnt glass as still whole, we have so many thank yous to give because our cup overfloweth with all the love and support coming our way. You are right, the trauma and devastation is unimaginable and leaves you raw and bare boned to the world. But the outpouring of love has held us and given us the space to mourn and the impetus to smile again. So much gratitude to all of you who have held us in your thoughts, sent love, practical stuff and acts of kindness our way! Every bit helps! Thanks

This from Rhi..."It is all so incredibly surreal and everyone is asking us how they can help and we don't have the answers yet. We managed to save all our animals, some journals, photos, some clothes and the hard drives with more photos and back up. The rest is all gone as you'll see in the photos. We are going to have to start from scratch and release all the stories and sentimentalities of family heirlooms and things with houding. Right now we are safe and we have a place to stay with our menagerie of animals and that is a start"
