Story
The figures are stark: someone in cardiac arrest has minutes to be saved. Every minute is vital!
A First Responder is a volunteer within the community who has been trained by the Ambulance Service, and attends a seriously ill or injured person in advance of the ambulance’s arrival. There are now 7 volunteers in Tamerton Foliot willing to be trained, but the Ambulance Service first needs to buy the kit which costs £3,000. The kit includes a defibrillator, oxygen, mouth pieces, blood pressure monitor, bandages etc and a highly accurate GPS tracked pager linked directly to Ambulance Control.
What kind of emergencies do Community First Responders attend?
Responders attend particular types of medical emergencies where it is essential for the patient to receive immediate life-saving care. This includes conditions such as:
• cardiac arrest;
• chest pain;
• breathing difficulties;
• unconscious patients;
• fitting;
• stroke.
You might think we are just 2 miles from Derriford Ambulance Station so do not need this, but the Station is normally empty these days with ambulances on calls or in holding areas elsewhere across Plymouth – recent press coverage highlights the pressure.
This appeal is to fund the equipment so the process of selecting and training the volunteers can begin.

7 years agoHello, thank you for supporting TF First Responder project. On crowdfunding so far we have raised £80. This will join about £220 from the Queens. I am now looking at supermarkets in the area and hoping the Carnival and Folly Fest will help. Regards Nic
