    Story

For the last three years I have been researching a mid air crash that killed fourteen US servicemen during a full scale pre D-Day training exercise called Exercise Eagle. I was told the story of the crash by a US 505th PIR veteran John Diffin. John mentioned during one of our phonecalls that his newly appointed, and well liked platoon commander Lt William Gullick was killed in a crash before they jumped into Normandy on D-Day. With this snippet of information the project snow-balled, it soon became apparent during researching the crash that very little was known locally about what happened that night on the 12th of May 1944.

Visiting the area of the crash, it was clear currently no memorial is in place to remember those brave fourteen men lost in this tragic wartime accident.

I set up the Eagle project to ensure through research and contact with family members of the victims and locals, those men are not forgotten over the course of time.

I believe it is so important to create a memorial that will stand the test of time, due to this I have selected Holy Trinity church in the heart of the local community for it to be placed. I hope it will be passed and viewed by locals and visitors to the area who take a moment to learn about this tragic accident. If this can be achieved I believe the loss of those men can be remembered for many years to come.

I have agreed a design for the memorial with a local stonemason and plan to hold a memorial unveiling ceremony in May 2017 on the 73rd anniversary of the crash.

All donations are greatly received to support funding for the stone memorial. I hope to raise enough to also purchase a tree to plant near the site of the crash. Any funds remaining after the purchase will be donated to the Royal British Legion.
