Story
Thomas Lingham - Rhosneigr Lifeboat circa 1904
A small band of volunteers has got together to form The Holyhead Maritime Heritage Group. The aim of this group will be to work towards helping with Maritime Heritage in Holyhead and on Anglesey. We aim to raise funds to bring the Thomas Lingham back to Holyhead. Once home we will start to fund raise to restore the vessel (a similar boat has been restored in Whitby). Want to help? then please get in touch.
The Story
Simon Evans wants to return the Thomas Lingham, which is currently sitting in the middle of a field in France, to its ancestral home of Rhosneigr.
The lifeboat enthusiast picked her up roughly 20 years ago from a museum in Bristol and had hoped to restore her himself.
But the 59-year-old, who lives near Auxerre, south of Paris, has 23 lifeboats in his care and fears he will not get around to repairing them all.
He said: “It is a bit of wreck, I have to be honest.
“I got the boat from a museum in Bristol years and years ago.
“I am a big fan of lifeboats and I thought I could restore it.
“But I’ll be 60 soon, I’m not getting any younger and I fear I have taken on too much.
“It would be great to see her back up to scratch, in the condition she belongs in.”
The lifeboat dates back to 1904 and was in service for 20 years.
Mr Evans added: “The lifeboat was no longer used when the Rhosneigr RNLI station closed in 1924.
“She has obviously been through a lot since then.
“One of the options would be to cut it in half and mount it on a wall but the last thing I would want to see is her broken up.
