    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

    Story

I am undertaking this challenge in memory of our friend Tony Diver who passed away on the 25th December 2015. Tony had MS and was admitted on several occasions to the Physically Disabled Rehabilitation Unit (PDRU) in what was then the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

The PDRU provides care and rehabilitation for people who have many different types of illness and disabilities which may require different types of rehabilitation therapy. Monies raised will help towards buying equipment for the unit which could either be for physical care or social activities, whether in or out of the unit.

    The Challenge

I cycle most days to the office and back, my round trip of 12 miles occasionally causes a raised eyebrow, "wow, you cycle THAT far? Everyday?", which is fine and well but 12 miles is not really an athletic achievement nor is it by anyone's standards a challenge. The furthest I've ever ridden in a single day is around about 65 miles, the challenge of this fundraiser is to complete a bicycle ride starting in Glasgow and ending in Bruges, a distance of 400 miles. This will be split into two rides of 200 miles, the first to North Shields ferry terminal to catch a ferry to Ijmuiden in North Holland then the second from Ijmuiden to the iconic Markt or Market Square in Bruges. I will undertake this challenge with the absolute minimum of support.

The challenge will be undertaken during the week commencing 3rd April 2017. I will post regular updates via Facebook and Twitter.

    Why Bruges?

In one of our last conversations, Tony was talking about holidays and, knowing the affection I have for Netherlands and Belgium through my cycling visits, said I really must visit Bruges, saying how much he was sure I would love the city. When I decided I was going to do a cycling challenge I knew immediately where the destination was going to be...

This is probably my final post while my JustGiving page is active. I, we have been overwhelmed by the response to my crazy idea of cycling to Brugge to raise funds for the PDRU at Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. When I launched the page on Christmas Eve 2016 all I could think of was reaching £1000, maybe £1500 at a stretch, a few months later the challenged has been completed and the £3000 target smashed thanks to your generosity. I'll update you all with the final total tomorrow, mind there are three hours left to donate.

There are only three days left on my crowdfunding page but the response has been amazing form everyone involved; from the planning stages in late summer 2016 all the way through to the challenge itself only a week or so ago. I'll write a final post before it closes on Sunday but for now sincere thanks once again to everyone has donated.

Well then, now that the dust has settled and we are all back in the UK, I am delighted to say we have collectively smashed the £3000 target. I genuinely thought this might be an impossible number to achieve but we've done it. The page will remain open for just another week. It's been quite an exhausting week for all (cyclists and support) so thanks to all who have supported this cause to date, your response has been amazing.
