Story
What we hope to achieve…
Help us expand our welcome to strangers and friends, living out social value in one of Britain's iconic modernist buildings!
Described when it was built as a 'Workshop for Worship', the iconic William Temple Church in Wythenshawe, designed by leading Modernist architect George Pace, has strengthened its place in the heart of the local community developing into a Workshop for Welcome.
With holiday breakfast clubs, family activities, drop-in cafes for local residents and a base for numerous community activities, the church community builds on their inspirational name-sake, Archbishop William Temple, whose pioneering work inspired the post-war welfare state and radical welcome for those on the margins.
This amazing building is now just over 50 years old but with a heating system which no longer provides the comfort needed to welcome all those who enter. By supporting our heating project you'll be making sure that the building continues to be a hub of inclusive welcome - not just for worship - but for all who visit this incredible, Grade II listed, vast and unique space.
Architecture, culture, concerts, performances, hospitality, community building and social justice all combine to bring warmth to the heart of the Wythenshawe community.
Some information about our project…
Phase One of our project will:
• replace the current underfloor heating with a new system of perimeter radiators supplemented by fan convector heaters to boost the air temperature prior to services and activities
• wall mounted gas condensing boilers with programmable room thermostat control which would give time and temperature control to suit service times whilst also providing a low level of heat during 'off' times for building protection and better energy usage
• chapel, kitchen and meeting room areas to be provided with their own gas boiler of a 'combi' type so as to simply heat those areas when required whilst at the same time providing hot water supplies to the washbasins and sinks.
Phase Two of our project will:
• launch a heritage project to explore the relevance of William Temple's work around social justice, faith and civic life for today and to hold an exhibition weekend in late November annually thereafter
We hope to create a community facility that can be used by local people, increase the use of the building and make the heritage that exists within more accessible to local people. We hope to increase a sense of ownership within the community can explore the relevance of social justice work in places like Wythenshawe.
