    Story

The Asylum Art Gallery started as an independent art gallery renovated from an unused warehouse in Chapel Ash, Wolverhampton, in August 2014.
After offering a free space to local artists, there was such a need and support from the community, we formed a team from local artists and technicians and opened an office space, photography studio and workshop room in February 2015.

We have since curated and shown 44 exhibitions. We have also ran two Arts Fairs which encompass over 30 visual artists over a weekend and have an open office policy for the community to hot desk, socialise and share information from our server which contains hundreds of thousands of artists, art movements, music and film. Our wider goal is to develop the concept of ’The West Side Artists Quarter’ situated in the communities just outside of the main Wolverhampton city centre.
The west side artists quarter provides a supportive framework for existing venues , artists , studios , promoters and events and institutions within the area to be a part of a wider network that co promotes , collaborates and shares access.
We have already regenerated public spaces and derelict buildings such as The Asylum Gallery, Part of the Old Eye Hospital, The New Hampton Arts Centre hall and are branching now into a marketing campaign on local buildings canals and walkways with Marston’s.
The funding would help us to pay our rent for the next 6 months whilst we apply for larger funding streams and continue to provide all of our services for free to the local community.
All of the team are volunteers and it has been kept going for two years privately from the owner of the gallery who now cannot afford to put in anymore money.
We did receive funding last year , but since Brexit and the cuts to the arts , funding streams have become extremely thin and hard to obtain.
Please support us and give us the time we need to get through the funding stages which are normally at least 3/4 months.

I am the assistant curator and head of communications within Mental Spaces and The Asylum Art Gallery. Without the free gallery space that Corin Salter the art director gave me to develop work , I wouldn't have a portfolio to move forward in my career with.
