Story
Senlac Rotary Club Event
This year, we have a team of local runners and walkers of all ages participating in the Hastings Half Marathon. The team consists of Yellowmen, family members and friends, of whom four are serving Yellowmen , three of whom will be visiting West Pokot, Kenya in February, 2017, where we shall therefore be setting up our temporary training camp. Here we shall continue running and cross-training, particularly with fitness hula-hoops. The hoops will be left with local schools where the pupils much enjoy this new facility, introduced during our visit in September, 2016.
During this latest visit, one of our projects was to begin building a new classroom for the nursery department at Marich Pass Primary School. The teacher, Fridah, has in the past been obliged to teach in the open air, but currently she and the children occupy a classroom which has a wooden framework and which is about to collapse due to infestation by termites. The classroom we are building is innovative because it has a steel framework with steel meshing. It will not collapse and the mud can be replaced easily when required.
This type of building is quicker to assemble than a brick building, is strong and long-lasting, is relatively cheap and is flexible in terms of size. In the longer term, we have aspirations to set up a local mini-factory where steel frames of any size could be pre-fabricated. The structures so produced would be extremely versatile and could be used to build classrooms, dormitories, clinics, houses, offices and so on in any size or shape, while providing employment for the hard-pressed local community.
PLEASE HELP US TO HELP THE POKOT BY PROVIDING AFFORDABLE AND SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS
