Story
Myself, Paul, Sarah and Abbie are braving the freezing sea waters of Ballyholme for this year' boxing day charity swim.
Abbie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on 3rd Oct 2013, aged 9. She was initially injecting insulin up to 7 times per day. Type 1 diabetes Diabetes can't be cured. Treatment aims to keep blood glucose levels as normal as possible and control your symptoms, to prevent health problems developing later in life.
Her family are so proud of Abbie, she is so brave and is determined not to let this condition hold her back from anything she wants to do.
In June 2015 she received an insulin pump that has eliminated the need to inject. However Abbie still has to check her blood sugar up to 12 times per day by finger pricking, her parents have to monitor this regularly through the night.
The biggest challenge Abbie has daily is Hypo awareness (this is when her blood sugar drops low), a side effect of this is that she becomes confused, dis-orientated and if not detected could potently put her in DKA (Diabetic Coma). This is very frustrating for Abbie as she quite frequently has to sit out of sports, miss exams and resit at a later date.
Over the past few weeks Abbie has had a (CGM) constant glucose monitoring device on trial, unfortunately these devices are not available on the NHS.
The main advantages of the CGM are as follows
Eliminates the need to finger prick especially during the night that will enable Abbie to get a full night of unbroken sleep;
Takes a constant blood reading opposed to a snap shot in time;
The Diabetic support team can use this constant data to analyse Abbie’s blood glucose patterns and make any necessary adjustments to her pump settings;
It will also alert via text message if her bloods run low or high enabling Abbie to react sooner and enable her to make adjustments;
The costings for the Dexcom CG5 device are around £600 for the starter kit + monthly upkeep of £100 for the consumables.

Sarah, Paul and I are going to support our lovely courageous niece Abbie by bracing the freezing waters of Ballyholme. Any donations will go to help Abbie fund a constant glucose monitoring device (CMD), not available on NHS but will make life a lot easier for Abbie. Thank you xx
