Over 70% of Indonesia’s coral reefs, among the most biodiverse underwater ecosystems in the world, are severely degraded from destructive fishing methods such as cyanide and blast-fishing.The beauty of these magnificent reefs is also being damaged by bleaching from increased CO2 levels from the burning of fossil fuels.The effects of climate change on the reefs must be determined through extensive research. It’s heart-breaking that irreplaceable habitats are removed permanently, without a second thought, mainly for economic gain. These reefs need to be conserved and the locals taught alternative fishing methods.

In July and August in summer 2017, we shall be taking part in a Operation Wallacea expedition to Indonesia. Our projects will involve carrying out underwater surveys of the abundance of fish and invertebrate species in order to determine the level of reef degradation and the impact of global warming and destructive fishing methods on these incredible reefs. The project costs will contribute towards more detailed surveying equipment, accommodation, meals and transport.
