Story
Dear friends and family
Abia DA Basic School is a village school in Prampram in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It was started about 20 years ago in a wooden shack. It now educates 275 children from kindergarten to 15 years old, in two concrete blocks partitioned into classrooms. They are taught by dedicated teachers who do their best with very little resources.
My friend Felicia has been supporting the school since its inception and her concern and desire for the pupils influenced me to send books to the school a few years ago. (P) I had no plans to get further involved but when I visited her again in Ghana early on this year we went to the school several times, and I could not help but notice the huge disparity between their resources and what I consider basic in the UK. I was deeply affected by the Arts Teacher, who had to forage for wood to make a table needed for his class. (picture).
The current level of resources are clearly inadequate for the diverse needs of the children.
This disparity has motivated me to join Felicia Adjei in wanting to increase the school’s access to more and better resources. To me education has been a fundamental aspect of my life and I firmly believe that it is the way out of poverty. These children and teachers are so motivated that I really believe with investment and support, we could be giving them the opportunity to realise so much untapped potential.
The dream of the school is to have an Information, Communications and Technology Centre with a library. However, when asked about their immediate need, they asked for help to have basic facilities and furnishings for the classrooms. I was humbled by their modest request and made a commitment with Felicia to raise the funds needed.
Since my late teens I have given and being a member of several charities. Those who know me are aware of my support for children in need, supporting relationships in families, church and mental health causes; both UK and global via existing charities, however the condition of the school was such I felt I had to do something that benefits the school directly.
Please help us raise £2000 for Abia Basic School much needed resources. Any amount is welcomed. The funds will be managed by Felicia who will ensure every penny is spent on the school. We will post pictures of its progress and account for all money spent.
We welcome any ideas or support to raise funds for the school’s continued development and thank everyone in advance for their contribution. THANK YOU.
