Ability in Disability is a project made up of young professionals of diverse heritage and strengths. We were brought together by the common goal of wanting to raise awareness, as well as sharing our knowledge and experiences with individuals living with disability in Ghana while bringing to light their potentials. Though the various governmental departments are working hard to achieve their goals in health and education, we are convinced that not all communities benefit from their efforts. However, we wish not to stand by and fold our hands but rather take up the challenge unfolding within our corners with assistance from all.
We aim to build a bridge between Ghana and the Diaspora whereby individuals with various skills will have the opportunity yearly to visit Ghana to share their knowledge gain in their respective fields with the up and coming generation especially individuals with disability.
Our prime aim is to build a multipurpose centre that will serve the communities in three ways.
• Firstly, it will serve as a community Hospital that specialises in the health of Children and individuals with disability.
• Secondly, it will be an educational centre that will continually raise awareness for individuals living with disability as well as equip them with life and vocational skills. It will be a place where families, communities and institutions can come to receive information and training.
• Thirdly, it will serve as a leisure centre that caters specifically for individuals living with various complex form of disability.
The first of such structures will be situated predominantly in the remote areas in the Brong Ahafo Region, Ghana. This location is our starting point of operation. Nevertheless, this project shall be extended to other remote parts of Ghana. Through various workshops, we aim to work with the various communities to create the assurance of there being ability in their disability. We will be emphasizing that there is strength in their weakness.
Secondly, we will be encouraging parents and community leaders to give their children the opportunity of gaining useful life skills in the fields such as catering, carpentry, and any vocation trade of choice.
