Story
On 28th January 2018 our mum, Susan Barkes, 68, was involved in a cycling accident near her home in Spain and suffered a traumatic brain injury resulting in a subdural hematoma. She was admitted to Carlos Haya Hospital in Malaga for urgent medical attention and was placed into a chemically induced coma. She was finally discharged on the 13th July, however, having suffered a stroke and now also being diagnosed with dementia, she has been left severely physically and mentally incapacitated and requires round-the-clock nursing care. For the last 3 months we have been paying for private 24/7 care at her home in Spain, but due to considerable mounting costs, and the fact that her family live and work in the UK, it has become clear that this is not a viable long-term solution.
We have decided to try and return her back to the UK, to be near to her family, and so that she may continue her rehabilitation with the hope that someday she will be able to regain mobility and neurofunction. Because of the highly specialist care and medication she requires, we need to employ the use of a private medical repatriation service and need to raise £10,616 to bring her back safely.
These last few months have been a long and heart-breaking journey and we appreciate everyone’s support through this difficult time. Any help to meet the resulting costs of this tragic situation and bring her home to the UK would be greatly appreciated.

5 years agoAs many of you may already know, after 10 weeks stuck at Kent & Canterbury Hospital, last Monday Mum was finally transferred to the Holehird home in Cumbria where she will begin a course of physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Thank you once again to everyone who has donated and for all the support shown over the last few months.

6 years agoBig thanks to the company that I work for, Vanquis, who have very kindly agreed to match any donations made by colleagues (currently standing at £350). Mum is now back in the UK although sadly not yet placed in a rehabilitation centre. We're doing everything in our power to make this happen asap, but it seems these things just take time and the system is slow to move. Thanks once more to everyone who has helped us out with the extensive costs here, it makes a big difference.
