I've decided to sign up for this years Bristol 10k to get fit and raise some money for an amazing organization that's close to my heart. It would be great if you can help me achieve my goal.

So who am I raising money for?

As some of you will know earlier this year I traveled to Athens to take part in a volunteer project called Khora. The project, essentially a community center run solely by volunteers, works in solidarity with refugees affected by the war in Syria.

Khora isn't a charity, it aims to work in partnership with refugees and offers legal support, dental care, food, educational classes, child care and more. Real help at a grass roots level.

Khora is directly linked with The Bristol Skipchen, the food recycling organization that used to be in Stokes Croft. I used to volunteer sometimes with them and got to know the guys a little bit. When they left Bristol the Skipchen went first to Calais to help refugees there, and then to Greece. Following the closure of the refugee camps a few member went to Athens and helped found Khora.

Why am I doing it?

I was really inspired with what I saw there. So many people giving up their time and skill sets to help make a real difference to peoples lives. I left feeling like I wanted to do more to help so I figured I'd get involved with this years Bristol 10k and raise some money for them.

Khora is entirely funded by donations and fundraising, and the money goes along way over there. For instance during my stay they managed to get food portions down to 30p per meal. They average over 100 meals a day so that's a lot of very hungry people fed for £30. The money also goes to help equip the center with more equipment and to pay for the lease.
