    Story

    Adhara Autism Trust

A new autism trust has opened in Southampton. Getting Adhara Autism Trust off the ground has been the work of four dedicated women, each with their own links to the world of Autism. Two of the group, Angi Carey and Stacey Richards, are parents of children with autism who in addition to supporting their own children and families, are well known locally as ambassadors of autism and who between them support many local autism and parent groups and events. The others are professionals working in the field of Special Educational Needs. Beth Jacobs is a mental health practitioner who runs 3 Counties Counselling and Autism Assessment; Anita Bradshaw is a local Special Needs Teacher with a background in autism. Both Beth and Anita have significant experience nationally and internationally in supporting people with, or educating people about autism.
The group has already received personal congratulations from Scott Badesch, the President of the Autism Society of America. Anita has known Scott since she visited him in Washington DC. in 2012.

Adhara’s key focus will be on education: to support the education of people with autism and to educate people about autism.
Adhara will be running training events covering a range of topics about, and linked to, autism. These events will be open to professionals and non-professionals. Adhara will also be running a home-schooling support service.

Ultimately, the group intend to open a specialist school to support students with autism who find mainstream schools too overwhelming, and who often miss out on a full educational experience due to high levels of anxiety and school refusal.
