Weʼre raising £650 to Help fund the renaming of the roads around Spean Bridge Shinty Field as a permanent memorial to the late Councillor Billy MacLachlan

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered nonprofit.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

It is now 18 months since Billy passed away. He was a tremendous character who contributed so much to the local Community and to the Shinty World. He is remembered with great regard throughout the Highlands and beyond. He did sterling work representing the interests of the people of this area as a Councillor, he was the long serving fabric convenor of Kilmonivaig Church, but it is as a lifelong passionate participant and supporter of every aspect of our native game of shinty for which he is perhaps best remembered. His love of the game saw him travelling many many miles as a player not only with his beloved Lochaber Camanachd but also Tayforth and Glen Orchy.

He was instrumental in establishing an enduring link with hurlers in Co. Clare and even travelled to North America to promote the game. He refereed and supervised referees the length and breadth of the country and indeed had the honour of refereeing a memorable Camanachd Cup Final

He worked on a variety of committees at local and national level and was always to the fore whenever his local club needed him. He had an incredibly sociable outgoing personality which won him friends wherever he went.

As a tribute to Billy it has been suggested that we officially name the road leading to his favourite place on earth, the Spean Bridge Shinty Field, in his honour. This idea has the support of a great number of local people including the Community Council and all our local councillors.

Unfortunately this street naming process involves an extremely tortuous bureaucratic exercise including the seeking of individual residents’ agreement, advertising in newspapers, liaising with the Royal Mail and other bodies. The whole process including purchase and erection of signs, should it reach a successful conclusion, is expected to cost in excess of £1400. Rigorous funding constraints mean that Highland Council cannot contribute financially hence the need for fundraising. A generous Irish donor has already pledged a sum of money and we are hopeful of obtaining a Community Action grant. This Justgiving page will meet the remainder of the costs and give friends and well-wishers the opportunity to contribute towards this memorial to a much loved and greatly missed Highland Gentleman.

Dear Supporters. Many thanks for all you donations to date, we are overwhelmed with the support we have received so far. At the moment we have received a negative response from the householders on the roading naming to the pitch where Billy literally worshiped the ground. We are in discussions to determine if there is another avenue that we could dedicate in Billy's name within the community. While this is ongoing we are going to freeze the page temporarily. We will be back in touch with an update just as soon as possible. Aeleen
