    Story

Help My Mum provide Ramadan Food Packs for the less privileged in Sokoto, Nigeria

    Description:

For the past 8 years, my mum has been feeding the poor and needy in her community by providing them with ready made food packs in the form of Hausa Koko (also know as millet porridge, Akamu and Eko mumu) and Kose (also called beans cake and Akara)

She has been funding the project herself all along but this year she is unable to afford it due to the economy in Nigeria and the pandemic affecting her business.

There are many young and vulnerable people including “almajiri” - orphans who rely on the food packs for Iftar and even suhoor and it’ll be a shame for them to not have that anymore.

With your support, you’ll enable my mum to continue the project and also expand it to include food packs with Jollof rice for diner.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Whoever feeds a person who is breaking his fast will earn the same reward as him without anything being lessened from the reward of the fasting person”. (Tirmidhi)

And Allah (swt) says in the holy Quran "By no means shall you attain righteousness unless you give freely of that which you love, and whatever you give, Allah knows it well.” [Qur’an 3:92]

What the money will be used for:

Hire someone to assist her with cooking

My mum is in her 50s and due to her old age, she is unable to do all the chores herself. My sisters and I used to be the ones helping my mum with making the food but since the two of us are currently away in university, the entire workload has shifted to her.

With extra hands and help, she will be able to expand the project and create more food pack to help more people.

Buy the ingredients for making the food:

    - [ ] 4 x 50kg bags of rice - 25,000 naira each

    - [ ] 4 x 25 liters of Oil - 20,000 naira each

    - [ ] Seasoning ingredients (maggi, curry, thyme and salt) - 40,000 naira

    - [ ] Takeaway plastic for the food packs

    - [ ] Vegetables (Pepper, tomatoes and onions) - 60,000 naira

    Cost of Hiring for help

    - [ ] 2 persons at 1000 naira daily - 60,000

    Glossary of words

Koko is made of millet that is processed and cooked into a form of custard which we call “pap”

Koose is made of beans, pepper and seasoning that has been blended together and fried using oil.

Together they make a combo of staple food used traditionally by Muslims in Nigeria to break their fast during Iftar.

A massive thank you for your donation last year. We raised a total of 1,456 pounds and were able to feed 50 people each day for the 30 days of Ramadan. We have now launched a fundraiser for the upcoming Ramadan in April and we would apreciate if you could support us again.
