Weʼve raised £663 to buy the book 'Natives' by Akala for secondary school students! (Educate UK students on British empire's role in race struggles today...)

Funded on Monday, 5th October 2020

    Story

To those willing to make a difference, but not knowing how... This is something I've considered doing for a while and I think that now is time for action. I hope you can get behind me!

After reading this fantastic book and discussing it with my friend (now a teacher), we both thought how it should be essential reading for secondary schools - who are taught next to nothing about our country's role in history and the forming of present-day racism.

Atrocities committed by the British empire have been erased from collective British memory and now as a multi-cultural country - whether you like it or not - we need to make every effort to educate children on our history and the part we had and do have to play, so that we can improve.

German children are still very much taught the social responsibility of the holocaust in schools, we must do the same.

My friend teaches at a London school, with predominately Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students, where the curriculum only teaches history from a white perspective.. this needs to change. I believe this book could make a real difference if it were simply absorbed by our youth's minds early enough...

If like me, you want to make a change regarding race issues, BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START, please make a donation (however small) to our book fund so that we can make a difference TODAY.

The aim is to be able to buy enough copies for a whole year 11 class... and so our target is currently around £900. If we raise more money, we will expand our project to include more schools.

Start small, but make a START.

    Thank you.

Great news! We've had an extremely positive response from Edgbarrow school... They're delighted to receive enough books for TWO CLASSES, as well as to go in their library & sixth form!! From the headteacher: "Part of our development plan for this year & next is about increasing the students access to a wider range of cultural reference material. We are also keen to provide a broader range of role models & Akala would support us in doing this." This is the best possible outcome. Thank you so much to everyone who made this a reality!! <3
