    Story

In July 2017, I will be going to Southeast Asia via Volunteer Eco Students Abroad (VESA).
I volunteered to take part in a variety of different activities such as: preparing daily meals for elephants, planting banana and sugar canes for their future source of food and building veterinary clinics.

Elephants are the most intelligent and largest land mammals which are very important in our ecosystem. Approximately 33,000 elephants are killed every year primarily due to the increasing demand for illegal ivory. Tourism industries use elephants and provide them with poor living conditions. In addition, elephants are beaten and stabbed to force them to obey and do the same routine each day. On top of that, elephants are often dehydrated, underfed and over-worked. This leads to physical and psychological trauma. Many end up with open wounds due to years of abuse. Through volunteering in Southeast Asia and working towards safety and survival of the elephants, I want to raise public awareness of the elephant poaching and elephant tourist camps.

During my stay in Southeast Asia, I will also teach English in local schools. This is extremely important in areas such as Laos, where grasping English can help in escaping the poverty cycle. I will also help in installing much needed infrastructure or doing simple things like painting school walls.
