    Story

In June 2016 our brother, Alex, became suddenly ill.

His health deteriorated at a frightening rate; within days he was in intensive care suffering from near liver failure and almost total paralysis, but the doctors could not make a diagnosis. After contracting pneumonia he was put into an induced coma to give his body a chance to fight it off.

He was transferred from our home on the Isle of Man to The Walton Centre in Liverpool, which specialises in neurological disorders.

He has now been diagnosed with a severe case of Guillian Barré Syndrome: Acute Motor & Sensory Axonal Neuropathy which, as well as being a total mouthful, is also a beast of an autoimmune disorder. He is completely paralysed from the neck down and is currently unable to speak.

Alex is an obscenely intelligent guy, an extremely talented artist and a gifted musician. He devours books, films and music and is just generally curious about the world - he knows something about everything. He is very much still the Alex we all know and love. He is still a total know-it-all, but a very frustrated one as he can no longer tell us all of the things he knows.

The specialists have stressed the importance of keeping him mentally stimulated to aid his recovery and we have already had very generous donations of an iPad and headphones for this purpose, which we are extremely grateful for.

Recovery from this variant of GBS can take a year or more. Alex's twin sister, Leanne and mother, Lynne are travelling constantly between the Isle of Man and Liverpool to support Alex through his long recovery. This is a massive financial cost for the family.

Please help us raise funds to ensure that Leanne and Lynne can continue to be there for Alex and make sure he gets the help he needs.

Thank you all for your support,

    Leanne & Jax, Al's sisters

I would just like to say an enormous thank you to each and every one of you for supporting Alex through this scary time. From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of Alex, our parents and our sister Jacqui, thank you. What you have done to help has been humbling and overwhelming. Alex is still making slow but steady progress and he's almost off the ventilator! He is looking to the future and feeling positive about a recovery. Alex is doing really well in the wonderful Walton Centre. He's receiving world class care from some amazing people. He has been utterly humbled by the kindness and phenomenal generosity of you all. He is making slow but steady progress and he'll be off the ventilator very soon. It's been a very emotional time for him and our family but it's been life saving to be able to be with him. That is thanks to you. There are 7 days left if anyone is wishing to donate. From the bottom of my heart, thank you xxx

Alex is doing well and the Drs are pleased with him! He's even able to speak a bit. Sounds like gurgling severe laryngitis but there's at least a little bit of sound! He's far more aware and asking questions. I read him messages from you all and he's amazed by all of the love and generosity. He is off the ventilator for about an hour at a time. Dr says it will be weeks before he's off the vent completely but he's working really hard with physios to do it. He really wants to come home and misses everyone. He's so grateful to you all.

It's been a busy few weeks. Al has had several visitors, which he really appreciated. It's been tough as the docs reduced Al's sedation and the full realisation of the situation began to hit him. Leanne and Mum have been keeping him company and making great use of the iPad donated by 2 very dear friends. He started treatment and the docs are pleased with his progress - he is beginning to regain mobility in his right arm which will help him communicate, as he still can't talk. We cannot thank you all enough for your continued support x
