Hello! I am currently in my second year studying Adult Nursing at Lincoln University. As part of my nursing degree I have the opportunity to choose an elective placement in any chosen place. I have decided to travel to Kandy in  Sri  Lanka to volunteer for 4 weeks.

This choice has been heavily influenced by the nurses that I have worked with during my clinical placements throughout my learning so far. From speaking to some of the nurses it has been made apparent that nursing in Sri  Lanka is difficult due to the lack of medical equipment, drugs and bed spaces. This will be a great opportunity for me to gain experience with the local nurses as well as develop my nursing skills.

I have chosen to work with a company called Work The World, who provide healthcare students with the opportunity to experience the challenges of health care delivery in a country with minimal resources. The money I will pay to Work The World then gets redistributed back into the local communities and hospitals to support their healthcare system.

As you can imagine all of this comes at a cost. I need to raise money to pay for my flights, accommodation and vaccinations for the trip. I also aim to raise money for resources such as medical supplies, books, clothes and toys for the local community.

Being born and raised in the UK we sometimes take for granted the benefits available to us and forget that there are others less fortunate than ourselves. We are fortunate enough to have the NHS, in places like Sri Lanka  healthcare is not as readily accessible to all.

This is my opportunity to give back!!
