    Story

On Friday 24th January 2020 there was a house fire in Berry Green, Stretham (Cambridgeshire). After terrifying cries of help from the first passer-by, Milton Rowlands who had tried to gain entry, Jamie Dama came running out in his pyjamas and without any hesitation ran straight into a burning building. He struggled to lift the male occupant inside after finding him collapsed, unresponsive on the floor. Jamie believed he was about to die. At this point, Kevin Jugg had also run inside, luckily feeling his way to Jamie through thick smoke. He grabbed onto Jamie's shoulders where they both continued to carry the male out of the burning building to safety. Jamie’s Wife, Michelle Dama rendered first aid as he continued to be unresponsive. She kept his airways open whilst awaiting emergency services. The male was subsequently airlifted to hospital where he has suffered severe burns and is now in intensive care.

Despite Milton, Jamie and Kevin being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, Jamie is now suffering with his chest and has been told he has Carbon Monoxide in his blood. All three are mentally struggling to come to terms with the reality of what actions they took, what they saw and the condition the male is currently in. They are not sleeping properly due to having ‘flashbacks’ and need to secure a longer period of time off work. Due to the nature of their contracts, quite simply, if they don't work they don't get paid. This puts their own recovery at risk, is having detrimental effects on their mental wellbeing and impacting on their private lives.

This JustGiving page has been created for our community to honour their bravery in supporting them by giving them and their families’ financial security to have future unpaid time off work.

Milton, Jamie & Kevin, you are heroes – thank you.

Brave acts such as that should be recognised. But I think the modern trend of companies not paying sick pay is a backward step. But I doubt if our currently government will redress the balance.
