Weʼve raised £650 to aid me in my placement to Sri Lanka to volunteer for 4 weeks to gain experience in a low-resource hospital.

    Story

I hoped that you may be able to provide me with a donation towards my hospital placement in Sri Lanka, any donations would be very much appreciated.

I am taking my placement with Work the World, a reputable company who have been conducting healthcare trips to developing countries for over a decade. The placement is structured to help students like me to gain experience with treating diseases and advanced pathophysiology that are rare in the Western World. I will be able to apply my knowledge that I have learnt in the last 2 years at university to care for patients in Sri Lanka and share skills with the local clinical staff in Kandy.

My hospital placement to Sri Lanka will mean I get to experience practicing in a developing country and get first-hand experience in a very different clinical setting to that at home, which will be useful because patients in my local hospital are multi-cultural so I will be able to support them better.

Before I commence my placement, I am going to learn some key phrases in Sinhalese and when I am in Sri Lanka we are given the opportunity to learn more of their language, which will help me to communicate with the patients. I will also be able to meet with other students from all over the world and share experiences with each other.

I will be there for 4 weeks and will be keeping a diary of my experiences. Just by working abroad for this period it will develop my understanding of various cultural needs and improve my non-verbal communication, which is key for nursing.

On my return from Sri Lanka, I would be very happy to share my experiences with everyone.
