Story
We want kids in Makeni to develop their full potential in a fun, healthy and protected environment. However, Sierra Leone, having just emerged from a devastating civil war is now recovering from the ebola epidemic, leaving families fragmented. Due to poverty, many kids are unable to participate in structured sports or play and and creative activities after school. They can be left vulnerable or, all too often on the streets, or having to care for younger siblings. Girls in particular are at risk of leaving school early to take over care-giving duties, or to try to earn some kind of living - unable to complete their education. We want girls and boys to develop their confidence to progress in life on an equal footing, outside of the conventional school environment, and to embrace childhood, relax, and develop their creative and physical talents together. The programme, with an intake of selected beneficiary primary to secondary aged children, is currently run by volunteers. The funds we raise will go towards a monthly salary for the in-country programme manager, pay for basic sports equipment, and fund snacks and refreshments at break time. Sessions are composed of 1 hour for sport, followed by 1 hour winding down with homework help, reading to each other in groups, drama games or art . Trained teacher volunteers from the UK support the programme by bringing fresh ideas, learning techniques, and new sports games to learn. Without our volunteers the programme would not be possible, but we now need funds to sustain the project over the next 5 years.
