Story
From September to December 2017 I will be interning for Women in Leadership, a grassroots NGO based in Busembatia, Uganda.
I will be delivering a programme focussed on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights to girls and women. The programme will cover issues including the importance of consent and opening up discussions about periods and sexual violence - including FGM (female genital mutilation), rape and forced pregnancy. Establishing an open, safe environment where women can discuss and learn about reproductive health and rights is crucially important for these women, their communities and future generations.
Sexual and reproductive rights mean any person should be able to make their own decisions about their body and:
• get accurate information about the issues
• access sexual and reproductive health services including contraception
• choose if, when and who to marry
• decide if they want to have children and how many
For many women, control over sexual and reproductive choices often ends up in the hands of others – husbands, in-laws, family members or religious groups. Women in Leadership Uganda promotes gender equality and their programmes empower women to make their own choices and realise their own opportunities.
I applied for the internship because I am passionate about helping girls and women to realise their own potential. Programmes like these equip women with the skills and knowledge to change their lives and the lives of their communities. This internship will build on the skills I've developed throughout my work in Girlguiding and my masters in Conflict, Security and Development.
Before the internship begins, I need to raise £500 towards core programme costs. I will be covering flights, vaccinations, food, water and other personal expenses myself, but would be so grateful for any help you can give towards the core costs associated with delivering the programmes.
Thank you so much for any support you can give,
Amy xx
