Story
Get Rid of and Donate CIC established in 2017, environmentally focused voluntary community project working in the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark.
We are a non-profit organisation and non funded, therefore funding privately from volunteers, fund raising, donations to cover our transportation, premises and project expenses. We are using a van loaned to the project to collect our donations from the community, recently, there was an attempted break in and van was abusively damaged. It was also vandalised by an unknown graffiti artist who has vibrantly sprayed the van on six occasions last year. This mysterious artist has also displayed and tagged on various locations around the borough. We have previously informed the police of these incidents and installed a hidden camera to catch the offender. We have limited funds, therefore, unable to use our limited resources to remove, repair the damage and vandalism. We are trying to raise funds to acquire our own van with better security, with an installed mobiliser and alarm system. We are reaching out for the support to help us to keep our work continuous and secure our donations. The van is a huge asset for Get Rid of and Donate CIC which is 100% dependent on our community service.
We are working hard supporting the council and local people on our concerns of the persistent disposal of domestic and commercial waste disposed on streets and kerbside. Bulky objects, furniture, electrical, appliance and excess rubbish bags contents with much of good value and condition that have been abandon on streets. It has become national phenomenon and even more acute in inner cities.
In the UK, society has become ‘consumerist’ and more likely to have acquiring goods they don’t need. Apart from it being a waste, there is also the environmental impact. With the pressure from EU and UK Government, the reliance of landfills cannot continue with the current level. We must take control on a local level and minimise waste in our communities.
Our community campaign is to keep the streets clean and so far achieved a tremendous response, from the residents in the community who donate. With our collections we recycle, rejuvenate and up-cycle giving in turn supporting and giving back to people in need making a change and transformation in life. We identify these as refugees, young people/families, children, mental & disabled, elderly, deprived and homeless people. We recycle usable daily consumption items that could benefit people in need i.e. batteries (car and household), furniture, bicycles (for reuse), books, carpets and rugs, electrical items, fridges and freezers, textiles, clothing and shoes, tools (for reuse) etc; We collect donations ‘door to door’ our volunteers replenish, repair good/working unwanted items and distribute.
