Weʼre raising £1,500 to send Andy Revill to Malawi with dental care charity Smileawi in August 2019, as both a volunteer and documentarian.
Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
My job as a journalist is a career path that I have wanted to pursue for many years, and I am extremely proud and lucky to be finally earning my keep doing what I love, in my home town where I was born and raised.
One story my Editor sent me out to cover was the visit of MP for Argyll and Bute Brendan O'Hara going to visit Nigel and Vickie of The Hollies Dental Practice in Dunoon, to talk about their charity Smileawi .
I have never had the opportunity to volunteer before, and certainly not overseas. However now that I have reached my goal of becoming a journalist, I am hungry to become the best journalist I can possibly be, and the opportunity to document a local charity as they work - and obviously give any other help that I can - was too good to pass up.
When I discussed the possibility with Nigel and Vickie, I had at the time completely forgotten that my Granddad had been posted to Malawi (then Nyasaland) after WW2, where he worked as a journalist. This lends a very personal note to my family story, a sort of closing of a circle which I am keen to be a part of.
My full total is £1500, and I have about 12 months to get there, and will be working hard to raise money elsewhere, but if my story has moved you, or more likely if the work of Smileawi means something to you, I would greatly appreciate your support.
Thank you all.
