Story
I would like to raise money with a bike ride from London to Paris for 2 causes I feel passionate about. The charity MercyShips and the anaesthetic department at the University Hospital in Cardiff.
1) "A lack of access to safe, affordable surgery kills more people in low-income countries than HIV/Aids, tuberculosis and malaria combined. Globally, there are five billion people who have no access to safe, affordable surgery. Mercy Ships is working hard to plug this gap. The charity operates the largest civilian hospital ship in the world, delivering free, vital medical care to some of the world’s poorest countries. This “floating hospital” is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, who give their expertise for free to help treat dental and eye problems, cleft lips and palates, tumours, club feet, childbirth injuries, burns and a variety of other conditions. Since 1978, Mercy Ships has visited more than 70 countries, providing services worth more than £1 billion that have directly helped more than 2.5 million people. Mercy Ships has also trained more than 38,000 local health professionals in order to leave a legacy that lasts. This is a charity I have worked with for many years and I feel very passionate about as it focuses on the individual restoring dignity and self worth. It also provides education for surgeons, nurses and anaesthesia providers from local hospitals "MercyShips" is affiliated with when docked in the port city . The charity also provides funding for new equipment for the local hospitals . The money raised I would like to donate to the MercyShips educational project (medical capacity building-MCB) in anaesthesia. This provides teaching and training for the local anaesthetists and funding for anaesthetic equipment to improve safety in anaesthesia in low income countries.
2) The University Hospital in Cardiff is a tertiary referral centre providing specialised surgery and anaesthesia for the people of Wales. Patients with complex medical problems and the ever-increasing problem with obesity cause a challenge for surgeons and anaesthetists. Giving anaesthesia safely for these complex cases requires special equipment like a video laryngoscope. It is a piece of equipment to aid intubation in difficult airway cases and is classed as essential according to the latest national guidelines (DAS 2015) . We currently don't have it in all the areas we give anaesthesia due to funding shortage in the NHS. I would like to raise money for more video laryngoscopes to improve safety for our patients in all areas in the hospital we give anaesthesia.
Cardiff and Vale Health charity
The money raised I would like to share equally between the two causes.
