Story
This January I will be traveling to Gambia with other MMU students as well as other academics and students from around the country to discover the effects of globalisation, examine Gambia's history with slavery and colonisation and the future of a country that has recently elected its first new president in 22 years and therefore escaped a dictatorial regime.
Whilst on this fact-finding trip I will be visiting the Gambian charity BAFROW that works to rid the country of FGM and helps survivors. Gambia has an upsettingly high rate of female genital mutilation and it's vital to work with these charities to lower the rate of this abuse which effects around 78% of women in the country.
Bafrow's key objectives are:
• Provide & support healthcare services such as reproductive & sexual health, child & maternal health & prevention of HIV/Aids & other STDs.
• Advocate & support activities on women & environmental management & protection.
• Create action research programs and mobilize campaigns against detrimental cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) in Gambia, promote alternative rights of passage and encourage positive traditional practices.
• Spread awareness about political, social, economic and environmental issues and allow groups to give meaning of such issues and express means for actions dealing with them.
• Push for women's economic empowerment through village savings schemes, micro-financing and capacity building in enterprise management and planning.
• Reinforce institutional and community capacity, civic empowerment, community involvement in socio-economic development at all stages as beneficiaries and partners.
• Produce empirical data and gender analysis about females and issues related to their capacity based on pilot projects, case studies and research.
• Advance women's and girls education through advocating for the keeping of girls at all grades within the schooling system and basic literacy tuition for women who have been by-passed or neglected by the education establishment.
• Encourage a high rate of networking between community groups in the rural and urban areas.
• Support and strengthen Youth Advocacy Groups of BAFROW for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in Gambia.
Also on this trip I will be spending 24 hours with a Gambian family in a village with no electricity or running water in an effort to truly understand what it is like to live without the privileges that I'm used to. There will also be an opportunity to do a placement within a civil rights organisation TBC.
Whilst in Gambia, our delegation will be hosted by Global Hands. Global Hands is a Leicester-based Social Enterprise set up in January 2012 and a Charity in The Gambia by current and former De Montfort University staff and students motivated to do public good. Setup as a Community Interest Company (CIC) and a Charity, Global Hands aims to tackle issues regarding local and global inequality by raising consciousness about local and global issues through community engagement. Additionally, Global Hands is interested in supporting people build their capacities to address these issues. Global Hands engages communities through informal and non-formal methodologies to provoke their consciousness, leading to an action they choose that is commensurate to their abilities.
