As most of you know, I am working at a school in Tanzania. In relative terms, the school is quite well resourced, but there are very few books. I was teaching a group of children in Year 6 a few weeks ago and I read them a story at the end of our lesson (Leon & Bob). I asked them "When was the last time a teacher read you a story?" and the response was "never". There is no culture of reading books or learning through books as the school does not have any. Books are such an important aspect of a child's development and bring so much joy... I feel that without books, the foundations of the school are missing. There is an organisation called Books2Africa. They can send 1000 recycled books to Tanzania for £500. I am hoping to raise enough money to get 1000 books and then create a small library in one of the empty rooms. Any donations will be hugely appreciated and I promise that I won't run off to Zanzibar with the money.
