On the 26/02/17 I'm going to be running the Brighton half marathon. I wouldn't normally consider doing anything like this as to be honest I'm just too lazy, but this cause means a hell of a lot to me!

My 9 year old nephew Alex is wheelchair bound for life due to a condition that he has suffered from since birth, spina bifida. This condition is essentially where the spine does not develop properly. Due to this condition Alex has no feeling from his hips down, and therefore is unable to walk. He has had other issues due to having spina bifida, including club foot, dislocation of both hips, and hyper extension of his knees. He has had numerous operations due to these issues, and is a constant visitor to St. Thomas' hospital in London.

Regardless of this Alex has grown up to be an amazing person. He is kind, enthusiastic, and a genuinely caring boy. He has just recently started to become interested in playing sports, which we as a family have obviously encouraged. To play certain sports such as wheelchair rugby, basketball, handball, and tennis Alex will require to have a sports wheelchair. These are different to normal wheelchairs as the wheels are at a more pronounced angle and the frame is made of a much lighter material such as aluminium. This is to provide more stability when turning and to make it easier to move the wheelchair around at a faster pace.

Alex wants to be like all of the other kids at school, running around like lunatics playing games such as football etc. Although we can't make that happen we can provide him with the equipment he needs to still participate in competitive sport. That's why I'm raising money towards his wheelchair.
