    Story

Many of you know Neville Smith, Nev is the most life loving person you would ever be lucky enough to meet! I was lucky enough to meet him 31 years ago when this big black guy stopped me after three days of seeing my riding to school on a track bike. He wanted to know who I had nicked it off. Turns out, Nev was “retired” and had been a bloody good rider in his day, in a different time, Nev would have been afforded many other opportunities given his talent. He had raced with and beaten Gary Wiggins, Tony Gowland, Maurice Burton to name but a few.
I started training with Nev and managed to get him to start racing again. Nev is a welder by trade, he has always been keen on the gym and in about 1993 he studied to be a gym instructor and then started working at the Aspire gym in Stanmore which is attached to the Royal National Orthapedic Hospital. Little did he know how pertinent this would become in 25 years time.
Nev at 64 still races the Welwyn and Lee Valley track leagues, he rides from Stanmore to Watford to work every day and on to the gym three times a week. Everyone that Nev trains loves him, it's not unheard of for him to be bored at the weekend and decide to ride to Manchester, or a day trip down to Brighton for fish and chips.
A month ago Nev was knocked off of his bike, his memory of the incident is pretty vague, there are no concrete witnesses but it appears it was a malicious attack by a secondary school pupil also riding a bike. He managed to slow down and was only travelling at 10mph when he went straight over the bars and landed square on the top of his head. The impact broke two vertebrae and compressed three others. Instantly he had no feeling below his chest, he was taken to Paddington hospital where they operated on him that evening. Going in through his throat they repaired the damaged compression and screwed and bolted the other two back together.

I will be getting Nev his iPad Pro and headphones in eight days when I am able to access his funds. Any extra will be kept, Ive spoken to Daniel and asked him what’s needed, at the moment there’s nothing immediate. It’s a waiting game to see what recovery the big man makes. For now, he’s still at the Alderbourne rehab centre, Hillingdon hospital with visiting hours of 2-8pm. Thank you all, please do keep spreading the word and if you keep meaning to donate and forgetting to get around to it, please do it, £3000 would be amazing.Thank you all

Nev is making some progress, but it is very much good day or bad day. Some movement in his left arm in addition to his right on good days and some rotation in his right arm which is new. He’s getting a regular stream of visitors now which is great, that’s what’s going to keep him going, to know we are all rooting for him and thinking of him. You have all raised 224%, or £2800 which against an initial target of £1250 is amazing. Nev has an borrowed iPad at the moment as I cannot access the funds for another 8 days but as soon as I can >>>

Hey guys, ok so firstly I want to say a massive thank you for getting involved. Some of you have known Nev for years, some of you have never even met him, no matter which, you have all been amazing and your generosity has blown me away. Initially Nev was a little grumpy about me starting this page, but apparently his son Daniel told him that crowd funding is most certainly not begging for peoples charity but an avenue for people to help out and show the high regard that someone is held in.
