Weʼve raised £325 to help a young asylum seeker with PTSD

    Norwich, United Kingdom
Funded on Sunday, 21st October 2018

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

    Story

I mentor a young asylum seeker who needs help accessing legal and mental health support.

Legal aid is not working effectively and when his claim was rejected he had to engage a private solicitor to lodge his appeal. He has borrowed £1200 and may need a further £2000 if his appeal has to go to the next stage. As an asylum seeker he is not allowed to work and gets just £36 a week from the government to cover all his food and subsistence costs. Your one-off donation can help him afford effective legal representation to fight his case.

He has severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) caused by the events that led him to flee his country and suffers from constant flashbacks and suicidal thoughts. Although the NHS recognises that he needs help, they do not have the resources to offer him counselling now. Low cost counselling is available privately from £15 per hour. Your donation can help him access the counselling that he desperately wants to help him cope with the trauma that he has suffered.

Thank you very much to everyone who has donated - your donations really make a difference and your messages of support are just as important in letting him know that there are people out there who would like to see his claim succeed! Although the appeal was due to be heard last week, the solicitor had requested a deferment in view of his current mental illhealth. I am pleased to say that this has been granted for the time being.
