£3,293raised of £30,000 target by 29 supporters

Weʼre raising £30,000 to raise awareness of our positive mental health campaign, which concludes with a 3000 mile row across the Atlantic for our chosen charities

Southampton, Hampshire

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered nonprofit.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

We are Adam & Stu as serving Fire Fighters, we have both had to overcome some form of mental health problem during their working life. Coping with the loss of colleagues at work, the regular pressures of making life and death decisions whilst attending a wide variety of life threatening incidents, or daily pressures such as keeping a roof over their families head. It’s of no surprise then that over the last few years we all have witnessed a dramatic increase in mental health issues in the workplace and we are determined to do something about it, for everyone.

The £100,000 we aim to raise including corporate sponsorship will cover the setup costs of the challenge and all other proceeds will go directly to charity. Our boat was an absolute bargain to keep the costs down, lets just hope she stays a float.

One person in four will experience some form of mental health issue in a given year (MHFA England July 2018). Mental health issues are responsible for 72 million working days lost and cost £34.9 billion each year (MHFA England July 2018). Poor mental health severely impacts on individuals and their families, especially in the emergency services.

We are looking to row across the Atlantic from the Canary Islands to Antigua in December 2020 to raise money for, and awareness of Mental Health in the workplace.

This is a physically very demanding challenge that very few people have successfully completed (3000 miles in 37 days – this will beat the pair race record set in 2017). We are supported in our preparations by the Solent University who will be helping us reach our peak physical condition (for our age!) before setting off.

Our Aim

With a proactive approach to sponsorship, we aim to raise awareness of mental health issues in the workplace, reduce the stigma of mental ill health, educate and instruct people to become Mental Health First Aiders and raise money for our chosen charities. We aim to raise £100,000 and all monies after costs will be donated to:

Solent Mind (to support their mental health services across Hampshire)

The Firefighters Charity (to help support the running costs of their redesigned mental health centre at Harcombe House, Devon.)

Our Challenge

To complete the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge and attempt to beat the race record in our class.

The Talisker Atlantic Challenge is the premier event in ocean rowing – a challenge that will take us more than 3000 Miles west from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain to Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua & Barbuda. The annual race begins in early December, with up to 30 teams participating from around the world, helping each other to prepare for the challenge of the mighty Atlantic Ocean.

The Team

Stu Vince - Watch Manager, Red Watch, St Marys Fire Station, Southampton

Rowing the Atlantic Ocean has been a dream of mine for over a decade (I had previously entered the race in 2010 but had to withdraw due to donating a kidney to a close personal friend in the June of 2011). After my donation I suffered severe mental health problems that have affected both myself my partner Rachael and my family tremendously. I have two girls aged 16 and 13, with a third baby on the way. My drive is to prove to my children that with determination and hard work you can overcome any adversity. After the recovery from my donation I organised and completed a charity run from Portsmouth to Lands End and back, completing a marathon a day for three weeks to raise money and awareness of organ donation in the UK.

During my 21 years in the fire service I have witnessed too many colleagues suffer with depression and anxiety through the challenges we face at work daily. I have therefore become a Mental Health First Aider to support my colleagues with their mental health. Along with Adam, we have been nominated to become Mental Health First Aid instructors through the MHFA England programme. To raise money for both the Fire fighter’s charity and Solent Mind will be an absolute honour as they have helped in both my physical and mental fight to return to operational duty within Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Adam Bundle – Watch Manager, Blue Watch, St Marys Fire Station, Southampton

After serving five years in the Royal Navy and 14 years at St Marys Fire Station as a Firefighter, I regularly see and have experienced myself the mental strain that working in the emergency services can take on your life. Whether it’s the harrowing sights we see on a day to day basis or the sad loss of colleagues operationally due to ill mental health, you can’t help but take it home. As a result, like Stu, I actively support my colleagues and friends as a Mental Health First Aider and I am soon to be a qualified instructor in this subject. I organise awareness training for supervisory management and I do everything I can to reduce the stigma of mental health conditions. I am a loving husband & father to my wife Natalie and my daughters Maisie (4) & Mollie (1). I am a highly motivated person who thrives on arduous challenges; I’ve run the New York Marathon in Breathing Apparatus and fire kit and won a charity boxing bout against the Police in front of 1000 people. However, nothing I have previously done could prepare me for this physically and mentally challenging voyage.

Well, we’ve received our invoice for “Patience” 30 days to secure £10,000 - nothing like putting ourselves in a tight spot. We’d never get a better deal than that though! We had to commit! Time to be brave, swallow down and hard work! 🤞🏻

Meet “Patience” she is potentially the newest member of our team. If we can raise £10,000 by August through corporate sponsorship & crowdfunding. “Patience” is described as a “Classic” design by the Ocean Rowing Society, she has an Adkin pairs hull and she meeting the criteria for the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. She looks a little bit neglected at the moment, but like any underdog story, she’ll come good in the end. Especially when we wrap her in a brand new coat of vinyl. Please help by donating what you can afford & sharing our posts
