Back, sack and crack for mind in Bradford.
Being poorly is not the worry it used to be. We go to the doctors and explain what's wrong; we get some medicine and hopefully we get better. Not many of us are medically trained, so it’s fair to say the responsibility and due diligence is on the doctor to know what to do. Not much is expected of us; do what the doctor says and trust they’re right. In a similar fashion mental health is also given the same amount of responsibility and diligence; we revert back to thinking in terms of illnesses- “there’s something wrong with me so I’m off to the doctors”.
Mental health cannot be fixed in this way- though not many people seem to realise this. Countless people arrive at their doctors to be treated as though they are suffering a disease or an illness. With depression, anxiety and the like, a medicine approach can take the edge off feeling blue and curb behaviour towards being more functional. But this course of action rarely works as a full time fix for poor mental health; no behaviour or misbehaviour or emotion can be a disease; that’s not what diseases are. Everybody is different and the help we need should be tailored to each of us.
Through no real fault of our own we don't consider that we have to change to get through our current predicament; instead, we seem to just want to be excused from it because of things that have happened in child hood and its this attitude and lack of responsibility that I see as the problem and what I want to change. Human beings are amazing creatures with the ability to adapt and change. But we don’t trust our innate ability survive and find the answers to the deepest darkest depths of our suffering because we rarely give this course of action the chance; probably because it is very hard and is littered with facing up to things about ourselves we don’t like. But with the right help and support I believe facing up to our demons voluntarily and living a life that’s authentic to whom we really are is the way to get our lives back; to finally give mental health the sack and to once and for all get mental health cracked. I think J.K Rowling said it better than me though so I will leave you with this;
Young wizards and witches would suppress their magic to avoid persecution- or were forced to suppress through physical/psychological abuse. Instead of learning to harness or to control their powers, they would develop what was called an obscurus. It’s an unstable uncontrollable dark force that busts out and attacks……and vanishes. This energy could manifest itself as a separate entity that can erupt in a violent, destructive fury often focused on the cause of the torment.
