Story
In 2015 I spent 5 weeks in Tanzania with the charity Raleigh International. While I was there I helped to build sanitation facilities for a primary school in a rural area, as well as teaching students and adults in the community about the importance of hygiene and sanitation. Despite the project being very challenging, the amount I learnt about global health and the importance of educating youth inspired me to apply for the Sport in Action program through Durham University.
Durham University is a member of the Wallace Group, a collection of universities striving to improve the skills of Zambian young people in order to promote development in the region. Having been lucky to receive a place on the program, I now know I will be spending 6 weeks working with children in province of Lusaka, Zambia. There, following Sport in Action's main focus, I will be using sport as a tool for personal development among students and the local community. As I have worked with mentally and physically disabled children in the past, my main focus will be to use sport as a tool of development among disabled children in the region. I, along with 4 other students selected from Durham University, will attempt to raise £6500 as a group, through activities such as the Three Peak Challenge and events within the university itself. However, we also each need to raise £750 individually to help cover other costs of the trip.
