Weʼre raising £1,600 to support the victims of asbestos by running the Sheffield Half-Marathon

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Story

I am Benny Gamsu I lost my Dad, Simon Pickvance(pictured above) in 2012 to mesothelioma, a cancer caused only by exposure to asbestos, a material he had come into contact with while working as a bricklayer in Sheffield in the 1970s. Asbestos was finally banned in the UK in 1999 - though it is estimated to still be present in 1.5 million UK buildings, including schools. Experts predict that by 2050 UK deaths caused by asbestos will top 91,000, with 61,000 occurring from 2007 alone. It is estimated that globally over 200,000 people were killed in 2017. While asbestos is now banned in 55 countries worldwide, its use is still legal in many countries , China, Russia, India, Brazil and the US being notable examples.

On 14th April, I will be returning to my home city to run the Sheffield Half Marathon, in memory of my Dad and in aid of 2 organisations which support victims of asbestos-related illnesses:

South Yorkshire Asbestos Victims Support Group(SARAG) provides help, advice, information and support to people affected by asbestos-related diseases and campaign about issues affecting asbestos victims and the continuing hazards of asbestos. Funds raised will enable them to continue doing their essential work.

The Asia Monitor Resource Centre(AMRC) works to protect the working conditions of workers in Asia by supporting a democratic and independent labour movement promoting the respect of labour rights, gender equality, and active workers’ participation in work-related issues. Funds raised will go directly to ban asbestos networks and victim support groups in South Asia.

I am hoping to raise £1,000 pounds over the next 2 months, with the money being split evenly between SARAG and AMRC.

Please help support the essential work these organisations do in supporting the victims of asbestos by donating to my JustGiving fundraising page.Thank you!

Hello everyone, Thank you SO much for all the donations you've made so far. In just a week we've made over £1,000! I'm incredibly moved by people's support and donations and so happy to be doing something so positive. Together I'm confident that we're providing support for and drawing much needed attention to 2 organisations which work on an issue which is widespread but much massively overlooked. I'm going to raise the target to £1,600 because I think we can get there and hopefully beyond! Thanks so much for you support! Benny
