Weʼre raising £1,920 to support an elective placement in Ghana, and provide in demand medical supplies to a Ghanain medical centre.

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

Story

As many of you know I am currently studying at the UEA in Norwich for a BSc in Paramedic Science. Part of the course learning is to undertake an elective medical placement.

I have decided to travel to Takoradi, Ghana in February 2019 to volunteer in a hospital for two weeks. Hospitals in Ghana are severely underfunded, understaffed, underprivileged and, unsurprisingly, in desperate need of resources.

Between now and February, my aim is to swim an equivalent distance to the distance between the Port of Tema, the nearest port to the Accra, the capital of Ghana and the Port of Takoradi, near the health centre where I will be based. The money raised through this fundraising will be used to cover some of the costs of the trip and purchasing essential medical consumables that are so needed in Ghana.

Throughout the course of the trip I intend to update with posts and photos regularly, and upon my return to England, I will use the money raised to send medical resources that the hospital staff request whilst I am volunteering alongside them.

So, the challenge… the distance between Tema and Takoradi is 104 nautical miles, which is about 192km. That is equivalent to 7,680 lengths in a 25m swimming pool. Between now and the trip, that means roughly 384 lengths a week, 54 lengths a day or 2 lengths an hour non-stop. Meaning that I need to swim the equivalent of 75cm every minute…non-stop!

My aim is to raise 1p per meter swum. This would mean a grand fundraising total of £1920. With this amount of money, I would be able to pay some of the costs of the trip and, for example, provide the Health Centre with around 2,057 Cannulas, 5,259 bandages, or 23,278 disposable sanitary towels.

Thank you for taking the time to read this fundraising post, and thank you for supporting the trip, be it through money, time, resource or prayer.
