Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
A terrible bush fire broke out in the Overberg region in South Africa on New Year's Day caused by stray (illegal) fireworks. Our Mum/Mother-in-law lives in this region and has been staying with us in the UK for a month. We monitored the fire on a daily basis via news and neighbours and understood that it was far enough away not to threaten her home.
She landed back in South Africa on Friday and after a long journey went to sleep, only to wake 2hrs later to billowing smoke and her plot on fire. Thankfully she was able to quickly escape before the fire encircled the house and cut off all exits. The fire had reached her car and damaged the wheels and the back window exploded from the heat as she was driving away.
We are so grateful that she escaped unharmed and is safe -staying at a local B&B and with family until it is deemed safe for her to return to her house.
By some miracle, the house itself survived the blaze mainly intact, though the heat cracked several large windows. The outside area however is in a bad way with most of it blackened and burned to the ground including the long wooden walkway used to access the house which is completely destroyed and damage to the solar power structure (tbc if this can be salvaged) and the extent of other damage can only be assessed once it's safe for her to return.
We know that there will be a number of costs the insurance won't cover and so alongside providing family contributions, we're hoping to crowdfund to help alleviate any shortfall. We haven't told her that we plan to crowdfund as the experience is still quite raw and we don't want to dwell on finances during our conversations.
We appreciate that it's just after Christmas so please don't feel obliged to contribute financially. Any donations and messages will be very much appreciated - we plan to surprise her with them next month.
Thank you so much
Jonathan & Hayley
