Weʼve raised £1,894 to Make vital repairs to Penistone Leisure Centre's Roof

Funded on Thursday, 18th April 2019

    Story

You may be aware that we have grand plans to renovate and extend Penistone Leisure Centre to make it accessible and useful to everyone! We've been busy drawing up plans for a new and wonderful Leisure Centre, and applying for funding from various grant providers to make this dream a reality.

You can see full details of the plans HERE http://www.penistoneleisurecentre.org.uk/refurbishment-plans/

We were delighted to receive funding from Blackstone Edge Community Wind Farm Fund to make repairs to our old and leaking pitched roof, to re-roof a flat roof at the back of the centre, to install new A-Rated Windows in the front of the building, and to install LED lighting in the main hall. It felt GREAT to see the scaffolding going up, and work beginning on this first stage of works.

The scaffolding went up, and today we were dealt the blow that the damage to the roof is MUCH worse than expected and than we had been quoted to repair. In the centre of the pitched roof, there is a massive roof-light. Nearly all the glass panels in this roof-light are cracked or broken and the wooden frame that holds the glass is badly decayed and fragile. This repair is vital and urgent to safeguard the centre, and prevent further damage to the floor in the hall. We have been quoted £7,080 to make the roof safe and watertight, and now URGENTLY need to raise this amount, as it isn't covered by the grant.

We had been planning on launching 'Penistone Leisure Centre's Big Build Fund' soon, with the aim to raise around £50k overall. But as it turns out, 'soon' isn't soon enough! We are heading towards a critical cash flow problem, so without help from the community, the project could stall, or worse- go under! As you can appreciate, this would be utterly heartbreaking for the many volunteers and centre users who have put their time and effort into the Leisure Centre for the last 7 years. This is just the start of the fundraising...

Perhaps you remember coming here as a child? Perhaps you bring your children here now? Can you imagine a Penistone without 'the drill hall'? We can't!

Please support us in providing sports facilities for everyone, and a community place for Penistone. Please consider donating what you can afford (ANY amount is appreciated!) to help us through this problem, and towards our end goal!

We've raised a fantastic £5114 towards the roof now, and will shortly be closing this fundraising page. We still have a little way to go to reach the total needed for the roof though, so please do think of us if you win the lotto! We've set up a charity profile on a website called 'Wonderful' where you can donate to us without us getting charged for it- and it's also possible to add gift aid too, to increase your donation. https://www.wonderful.org/charity/sportingpenistone

We're delighted to say we hit the £3150 target that we needed to be able to allow the roofers to go ahead (due to some offline donations combined with this justgiving page too!) So we're incredibly grateful to each and every one of you who got us there! Our current total (correct at 3:30 on Monday 25th March) is £4874! The total required to pay for the roof entirely is £6195, so we're just £1321 away from paying for it completely! Can you help us get there?

Our children have spent many enjoyable hours there in the past. All grown up now but hope this will help to keep the facilities for the next generation
