Story
On March the 27th 2018 a team of 13 students from Bishop Luffa Comprehensive competed in the local heat of the Magistrates Mock Court Trial in Worthing and won. In May they went on to perform in the regional competition against the other winning school and against all odds, won again. We are so incredibly proud to be going on to compete in the national final up in Birmingham. A Luffa team has never got this far and we certainly never expected to when we started.
'Being in court, standing up there in front of your peers, the competition, and being judged is terrifying. But once you start you're on a roll and the feeling is incredible. To be able to say that we've got through the trial is an amazing achievement. To be able to say we've won two rounds and are going to the national final seems unreal. This experience has made me think in a totally different way and has made me seriously consider a career in the law.' Bea Harmston.
This competition is for non-fee paying schools only, but simply getting to the finals in Birmingham from Chichester with an overnight stay will cost over £100 per student. Costs to cover include accommodation at Birmingham University, travel (minibus) to get us up the motorway and back, food whilst we are there. Parents are being asked to contribute as much as they can afford towards the trip, but we are expecting a significant shortfall.
'I never felt like a valued part of a proper team before. Being in mock trial has really boosted my self esteem' Amenie Groves
The judges said about us at the regional competition: 'It is a huge achievement to get to the national final of this competition but the manner in which it has been achieved has been spectacular. The standard of advocacy and in the other roles has been exceptional and every student has learnt a significant amount about the criminal justice system, themselves and how to ask questions of witnesses in court. I am sure they will remember the final for the rest of their lives.'
'It is rare to find students of such a young age able to read and understand Ian Morley QC's 'The Devil's Advocate'. Rarer still that they can put the tricks of the trade into practice with the pressure of a live, unknown witness.'
The Magistrates Mock Court trial competition has given me the opportunity to experience what it has been like to be in a real situation in a real court. It has increased my communication skills and my confindence.' Maya Solly
Being part of this competition has really inspired me to get into law and given me the skills I need for the future. I can't wait to compete again.' Naomi Elliot
Please help us get to the final. Any contribution you can make will be amazing and very gratefully recieved. Thank you so much.

Mock Trial team
6 years agoA huge thank you to absolutely everybody who has supported us and helped fund our cause. The experience we had in Birmingham was incredible and the memories made; unforgettable. Being part of the competition and having the chance to come together as a team has brought us joy, friendship and also confidence and faith in ourselves. We cannot thank you enough for enabling us to have this opportunity. I think it has been potentially life changing for us all, and it wouldn't have been possible without your support.

Mock Trial team
6 years agoThis is us at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Saturday 16th of June having just performed both cases. We were up against 16 other schools all across the country and we did amazingly well but did not win. We could not have done better as a team and we are so proud to have been there and done our best.
