    Story

South Africa is a country where social inequality continues to pervade most public spheres. The access to education – and particularly high quality education – is still extremely limited for children growing up impoverished community, especially in rural areas. However, for many poor children acquiring a solid level of education is the only way to breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty.

During the early years of education, children typically learn to read whereas in later years the learner reads to learn. Expert in the field, Nicholas Spaull, argues that low level of reading proficiency are the root cause of the very poor educational outcomes that South African learners consistently show (Getting reading right, Spaull & Hoadly, 2017). According to Spaull “the phenomenon of ‘schooling without learning’ where children progress through the grades without gaining knowledge and skills can largely be attributed to the fact that many learners do not learn to read properly despite enrolling and staying in school.” Exposing children to (English) books and practising reading at an early age seems, therefore, crucial to place children on a path towards educational success.

Bompini is a very small rural community in the Eastern Cape, South Africa which faces major challenges, including access to basic resources such as foods and reliable water supply. Up until 18 months ago, the community did not have any formal structures in place that would enable children to play, explore, and learn in a contained environment of a nursery. Since then, however, Claudia Everett and her partner Neil have worked on establishing “Heavenly Hope Daycare Centre” - from painting the interior over decorating the walls to training community members to work as teachers in the nursery.

Sadly, to date the nursery is still lacking a number of things solid selection of educational children’s book and toys! We would love to be able to surprise the children in the community on Heritage Day (24th of September 2018) – in case where the target is met, we would be delighted to share picture of the day of “book delivery” with all donors!

Please donate however much or little you can & thank you in advance!
