    Story

Update Aug 2019 - Thanks to substantial funding from Basaid we had lowered our original target from £18K to £12K in June however due to increased costs following a particularly severe monsoon this year we have increased to £15K to allow us to complete the project. The money raised will be used to complete construction, furnish and buy books for the library, train a full-time librarian for 12 months and start the cross-school lending scheme early next year.

On April 25th 2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal claiming over 8000 lives and immense damage to what is still one of the world’s poorest countries. One of the worst hit areas was the rural Rasuwa district (south of Langtang National Park and north of Kathmandu), a region with over 17K children aged 5-15. Apart from natural disasters and remoteness, illiteracy and limited access to information affect the lives of rural Rasuwa communities and keep them in abject poverty. Many children are sent away to distant towns for their education, where they are extremely vulnerable and are at risk of physical, emotional or sexual abuse.

Following a period of volunteering in 2017 we decided that we wanted to do something to improve teaching facilities in these villages and created Books4Nepal to build the very first library and school resource center. We are working with Hari Krishna Devkota, our friend and president of High Himalayan Community Projects Nepal. Please visit http://www.hhcpn.org/about-us/
A community library group has been set up in the village to oversee the project.

Once we have a working library, support from the Nepalese government will be requested for a full-time librarian. This model, once proved successful could be used by other communities in other regions of Nepal.

Please sponsor us to help HHCP Nepal provide these children with the books and resources they desperately need.

Every £1 really can make a difference!

    Thank you from the heart.

We are celebrating the 1st anniversary of the Rasuwa Community Library! Not quite the year anyone was expecting but despite the obvious difficulties and very little training our trainee librarian Satya has done a fantastic job. In March she will go on her first official training in Kathmandu to learn how to use the Koha library management system and bring the library online. Our training room is also now furnished so hopefully we'll set up some training sessions in the coming months. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this possible.

We are happy to announce our library opened on February 22nd!!! We have hired a trainee librarian, have over 200 members and have about 3000 books on the shelves. We still need to buy more books, furnish the reading room and get the interschool lending going but have already achieved so much thanks to all our generous donors! Thank you 🙏♥️♥️♥️♥️
