Our dad, Gordie, while on holiday in Cuba, got up one night to use the bathroom and his damaged legs gave out, falling, he hit his head. He suffered a catastrophic brain injury to which he didn’t recover and on 11 November he died.

An industrial accident at Sooke Saw Mill meant that he was disallowed travel insurance.

We as a family do not have the funds to pay his medical bill which would release his body.

We have until the 11 December to pay $30k CDN to release his body and have our dad repatriated to Canada. His wishes were to be cremated and have his ashes scattered at Otter Point.

Hi everyone, as you may have seen we received a really nice write up in the Alberni press. However we are quite far from our target and unfortunately have not been able to negotiate on the costs. We will run the campaign over the weekend and make a decision how to proceed on Monday. If we miss the target we will refund everyone's kind and generous donations. Thanks again! Tara

Hello all, we haven't made to much progress with various channels however there is a possibility that a benefactor is willing to cover the outstanding costs. I will find out more but so far it looks like the premise will be to have Dad buried in Cuba. As this goes against the original crowdfunding objective, everyone who has donated will be given a choice of what to do with their donation.

Hello all you lovely people. Thought I would give you an update on what we are trying to achieve. I have asked Global Affairs to suggest a negotiation in the cost of the fees to see if we can reduce the amount. In the meantime I am researching as much as I can to see if there are any options available to us. So far I have found something about BC Med covering costs of emergency care up to the cost of it being done in Canada. Fingers crossed this comes to something! xx
