This brave, special little girl was born with a rare form of Spina bifida (Diastematomyelia)

Diastematomyelia is a congenital disorder in which a part of the spinal cord is split, usually at the level of the upper lumbar vertebra. Diastematomyelia is a rare congenital anomaly that results in the "splitting" of the spinal cord in a longitudinal (sagittal) direction.

She has already spent most of her young life attending hospital visits.

Luna has already undergone her first major surgery on her spine. Her surgeons at Alder Hey were very surprised at the amount of damage she had to her dural sacs, which need to be rectified, unfortunately this could not be done at this time for fear of causing a stroke to her spine. They will however, need to rectified This type of spina bifida also means that she will have problems with her bladder and bowels, which means she may need to have a catheter fitted at some point in her young life. Worst scenario, Luna may not walk at all, best scenario, she will have a walking deformity (scoliosis) and weakness in her legs.

The subsequent major surgeries will involve further operations on her spine and dural sacs. This surgery is vital and must be undertaken quickly to avoid massive bleeding which could result in her death. Luna is currently awaiting numerous CAT and MRI Scans to check if brain fluid Is present.

Luna is a very happy baby – always smiling and happy, even through major surgery she managed to smile. Her mother is 20 years of age. She has no support and has bidded for social housing which unfortunately only has a shower in the bathroom and will not be modified by the housing association to accommodate a bath.

We are trying to raise money so that rooms can be adapted especially for Luna – particularly this bathroom and her bedroom.
