Story
Steve, 52, is a very well known and friendly busker in Newcastle. He's a recurring face on Northumberland Street and people have got to know him over the years for his long shifts playing tunes for the locals, as he says music that 'suits all ages'.
The local busking community has stepped forward to help Steve who was very lately the victim of an unprovoked attack and mugging that left him without amplification, a guitar and a mic to busk with. Steve speaks about how two men grabbed his guitar and case. He describes running after them, when they then attacked Steve and left him battered and bruised.
Steve is homeless, he's able to stay with friends now and then but as he explains he is essentially squatting after his girlfriend kicked him out. He has been homeless and working tirelessly with his busking for over 10 years out of necessity since losing his sick benefits. He busks often during the day and sometimes even throughout the night from Saturday evening to Sunday morning. He jokes "I'll happily play Oasis tunes all night if it's keeping me going".
We set up the page to try to give Steve a real chance with his busking. He does not beg, but is always seen putting in the hours to entertain the public and always has a great attitude. Unfortunately, as winter creeps in it will become harder for Steve to perform acoustically so an amplifier would help him significantly.
We are looking to raise £260 for the cost of a Roland Street Cube. This is a battery powered, portable amplifier. Steve owned one before the mugging and it best suits his needs if we can raise the cash.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to read this, whatever donation you can make will help Steve stay on his feet, and keep making Northumberland St musical.
The black eye Steve was left with.
Steve P, "I'm extremely grateful of anyone that can help in anyway, whatever helps me continue my gig on earth before we meet the 'great gig in the sky." he quotes Dark Side of the Moon, Pink floyd with a grin.
