Next year, I’ll be travelling with the charity Africa’s Gift to Malealea, Lesotho, to work alongside a small mountain community.The team will be working to improve environmental sustainability, agricultural development & promoting awareness of health & safety.

In order to improve these areas we will be
- working alongside the community to plant a variety of fast-growing trees this will lessen soil erosion & will improve soil stability
- building some weather-resistant gardens to help maintain a constant supply of food throughout the year.
- constructing some raised gardens for the older community members who are still heavily dependant on agriculture but struggle with manual work.
- Promoting the Wonderbag, a new way cooking that lessens open fire use

We know that women in rural communities spend most of their days collecting firewood & cooking on open fires. Approximately 2 million people die annually from open fires and related illnesses, with over half the victims being under the age of 5. The Wonderbag works by placing a pot that has been brought to the boil inside it, sealing it, then leaving it to cook without any additional external heat source. By doing this, the time & effort needed to cook is greatly reduced as well as reducing the risks of using open fires & the affect on the environment.
