I will be running the Regents Park Half-Marathon on April 9th, in order to raise money to help the International Refugee Crisis.

This summer, for the whole month of July, I plan to go volunteer in a refugee camp in Alexandreia, in the north of Greece. The organisation I will be working for, Refugee Support.eu, works in tandem with UNHCR, the Greek army, and the Greek government.

Refugee Support aims to improve the lives of the refugee’s by aiding the distribution of food and clothes in the camps, while also helping with the running of the camps and the organisation of activities. Importantly, it prioritises the dignity of the refugees, something that is frequently overlooked.

As a volunteer, my work would be divided between the Warehouse (where food and clothes are stocked) and the camp. A typical day would comprise of spending the morning in the camp, organising activities for the children, followed by the afternoon working to distribute the goods. In the evening, time would be spent at the Warehouse sorting and organising the goods.

Of course, I cannot offer medical experience, or legal advice. As a volunteer, I will not be ensuring the reunification of families, or heroically saving lives in the Mediterranean. However, I will hopefully be playing a small, but important, role in alleviating the situation that the refugee’s find themselves in.

The money I am hoping to raise in running the half-marathon will go towards my accommodation for the month, and daily substinence. Any money I raise over my budget I will of course donate to Refugee Support.eu.

***Accomodation is typically €25 a night. Any donations of that size are so very much appreciated, as they enable me to stay one more day as a volunteer. Of course, extra donations are always appreciated!***
