The Carolina Cavaliers are a 501(c)3 organization (EIN 80-0345045)that gets kids off the streets and into the gym in under-served areas of the community, at a fraction of the cost compared to travel programs in other areas of the Lowcountry. Many kids receive partial and full scholarships because of their circumstances. In addition to keeping the kids busy with basketball, the Cavs organization brings in mentors from the community for each of the teams and they are individually coached on academics, professional skills, resume writing, college entrance process, mental health awareness, community service, etc.
I have signed on to be the Team Mentor for the 11th Grade/17U Boys Team. I don't know a ton about basketball, but I do now what its like to work on a highly motivated and successful team at Blackbaud! So I booked a fancy conference room in our new HQ building, and had the 11th graders and their coaches in as my guests for a team meeting. Security had their name badges ready to go when they arrived, pre-printed and laid out on the desk. I brought pizzas and drinks in for the guys. I had notebooks, pens, an agenda and nameplates at their seats around the room. I presented a few slides, but most of our 2 hour long meeting was spent utilizing Patrick Lencioni's team building principles. We played a couple games to help build trust, a key tenent of all successful teams. Then we dug into individual and team goals for the upcoming AAU season, being sure to get lots of feedback and weigh-in from everyone involved. We even had one young man joining via telepresence because he lives an hour and 40 minutes away! It was amazing to have these resources at my disposal and the kids and coaches greatly appreciated our time and preparation. Thanks Blackbaud Facilities Dept!
No one takes a salary, paycheck or stipend from the organization, as 100% of the folks involved are volunteers. As such, 100% of the funds raised go towards the kids. The organization also works to provide healthy meals for the kids while traveling and periodically after practices during the season as some of the players live in “food desert” areas of the community.
But make no mistake, the players of this organization are top-notch and the teams are highly competitive and successful in the regional and national AAU circuit. It’s just that some of these talented kids would not otherwise get an opportunity to play if it weren’t for the Cavs. Teams include both developmental teams and more competitive teams such that no child is turned away. Teams serve boys and girls from 6th grade - 11th grade.
Thanks for your time... any and all help is greatly appreciated. We’ll greatly appreciate any help we can get for the kids!!!
