What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Over the last few decades, the east side of Distington Churchyard - the side used during the early Victorian period and beforehand - has been terribly neglected, to the point where the area is overgrown with vegetation, including 10-feet-tall bushes of ivy that have completely covered once-beautiful headstones and gradually damaged them to the point where bases have broken and inscriptions have been chipped away.

I am a Cemetery Development Contractor who has taken on the task of clearing the east side of the churchyard so it looks presentable again after all of this time. I dedicate one afternoon a week to this work, alongside my labouring assistant, and, when he’s unavailable, a fantastic team of stand-ins who are all hard-working young people with can-do attitudes and a desire to contribute to their community.

However, such a project isn‘t cheap. Aside from the employee wages that I pay (£10 per hour), the less-damaged headstones need to be restored, and this includes things such as new foundations that comply to modern safety standards; deep cleans; and re-lettering. It may be too late for the more damaged headstones, but a lucky few can still be saved and made to look (just about) good as new again.

Thank you so much for taking on this task. I'm contributing in memory of my ancestors who lived in the area around 1880-1910+.
